This is a Do It Yourself wooden boat repair and restoration project starting place. Here you will find information on wood boat construction, repair and maintenance. All the information presented here is from lessons learned from my own wooden boat ownership.

I have a 1957 27 foot Owens Flagship Express Cruiser. She is in reasonably good condition and has been used every season for the past seven years. I completed major renovations during my first summer of ownership. Now, every spring I enjoy making improvements and modifications.

Budget is the theme for this project. The idea is to have a huge amount of boating fun, without a yacht sized wallet. But, you will need to spend the dollars that it takes to get the job done. Spreading the repairs and restoration projects over time will soften the blow. It's all about fun, not money.

Your classic wooden Owens cruiser is probably not of historic value. Complete restoration to like new condition won't bring collectors to your dock begging you to donate the craft to a museum. You can however, turn heads, get complements and have a great time.

I cruise the Erie Canal and often stay over in Onieda Lake and other parts of the Upstate New York Finger Lakes region. There are many restored and project wood boats in the area. Some of them are really beautiful. If you see me there in my old boat, stop over and say hi.

Is it repair or restoration? Be reasonable and do it right.

What about dry rot? Wooden boats rot from the inside out.

Make a complete inspection. What type of construction is the hull? Inspect the keel, chine logs, stem, transom, frame and stringers.

Thru hull fittings, tanks, struts and cutless bearings, electrical system, rudder steering, cabin windows and hatches, bildge pumps etc.

Use epoxy like a pro. If your not using epoxy, your not doing it right.

Flagship Marine engine. Keeping the original 283 or 327 Chevy V8. Raw water cooling, Mallory Distributer, Carter Carb, engine alignment and more.

Sanitation System. Odor free, complete and easy.

Interior improvements are fun. Cushions, galley, bimini top and more.

See you on the water.
